First of all our big thanks to 'chuck rock' for pointing out this method, which was first hinted to by 'kjs0118'.

You'll need to download two tiny applications to perform this workaround:

1- MIDI Yoke (163 KB): This application will install virtual 'patch cables' that can route MIDI audio from one application to the other, in this case from Power Tab to MIDI-OX.
2- MIDI-OX (801 KB): This application offers an extensive set of features to manipulate MIDI messages and monitor them.

Note: Vista users should download the XP version of the two applications.

This tutorial will teach you how to tab drums inside Power Tab and overcome the 7-guitar limit.

Instructions:

Download PDF Tutorial
Download Example.ptb
Listen To A Sample

Don't forget to give chuck rock a big thanks, and feel free to report any difficulties you're facing.

I have a question: anybody who wants to just listen to a tab WITH drums will have to do the same trick, and actually ask the author/read up on what channel to change, right? Because, while this might be a fun "hack" to play around with, I think it only becomes useful if tabs saved with drum tracks play with them on any machine. That's not possible as far as I understand it, amirite?

You only need to provide the PTB file and the OXM file, and it will run on any machine with the two applications installed. Next I will show how to create the OXM file, which is really straightforward.

Yoke won't install for me, it just waits then it says it failed.

Hi S-GUO, thanks to you also for working on the Tutorial, and getting the word out. But shouldn't u be studying for your exams?

What Operating System are u running? Is your machine 32 bits or 64 bits? Midi-Yolk is software that allows applications to pass midi to each other. This type of software is common and is sometimes refered to as "Virtual Midi Driver", "Virtual Midi Patch Cable", "Virtual Midi Driver", or "Midi Loopback Device". You can "Google" these buzz words and find other similar programs. The reason I recommend Midi-Yolk is cause I have used it without issues and there wont be any compatability issues with Midi-Ox cause it's made by the same developer.

My guess is that if u have Vista or are running 64 bits, u may have a harder time getting a free "Virtual Midi Driver". Below are some that I have heard of, but never tested. If Midi-Yolk doesn't work, see if one of these fits your system requirements.

LoopBe1 http://www.nerds.de/
Comments: Freeware - LoopBe1 works on Win 2k/XP/Vista, but not Win 95/98/ME. Not sure if it supports 64 bit.

LoopBe30 http://www.nerds.de/
Comments: Not Freeware - LoopBe30 works on Win 2k/XP/Vista, but not Win 95/98/ME. This should support 64 bit.

Hubi's MIDI LoopBack device http://members.nextra.at/hubwin//midi.html
Comments: Freeware - This looks like it won't run on anything newer than Win95

In another thread I originally suggested to just use a standard tuned 7 string guitar to tab drums. But in an attempt to make it more user friendly and look more like a real drum score, and also minimize having to use hi and low melody or multiple drum trks in PTE, maybe we should use a custom tuned 7 str gtr as follows:
Code:
1st str tuned to E3.  This is used for any other Misc Drums
2nd str tuned to B1.  This is used for any other Misc Drums
3rd str tuned to C#3. This is used for Cymbals
4th str tuned to F#2. This is used for Hats
5th str tuned to F2.  This is used for Toms
6th str tuned to D2.  This is used for Snare Drums
7th str tuned to B1.  This is used for Bass Drums

Most drum tabs could be simply tabbed with just the below info. If other drums are needed, just use the other chart.
Below would be a typical measure of a drum score tabbed in PTE, and the allowed values:
Code:
  Misc1 |----------------| (see chart below)
  Misc2 |----------------| (see chart below)
Cymbals |0---------------| (0= Crash 1,  2= Ride 1, 3=Chinese , 6= Splash, 8= Crash, 10=Ride 2
   Hats |--0-0-0-0-0-0-0-| (0=closed HH, 2=Pedal HH, 4=Open HH)
   Toms |----------------| (0=Low Flr, 2=Hi Flr, 4= Low, 6=Low-Mid, 7=Hi-Mid, 9=Hi)
  Snare |----0-------0---| (0=Acoustic Snare, 2= Elec Snare)
   Bass |0---------0---0-| (0= Acoustic Bass, 1=Bass Drum 1

To try to keep all the tabs standardized, try to choose the “Perfered Way” to tab, unless the string is already being used.
Code:
                   | Note & | Perfered Way | Alternate Way to tab
Drum_Type          | Octave | (string,fret)| (string,fret)
-------------------|--------|--------------|----------------------
Acoustic Bass Drum | B1     | (7,0)        | (2,0)

Whoah that is a very helpful explanation of drum tabbing. Do you mind if I quote it and put it in the original post so that users can see it right away. I'm finally finished with exams and the tutorial should be finished tomorrow. I'm just surprised people here don't seem to be that excited with this wonderful gift you gave us. Or are they just skeptical about it, I don't know. Come on people, try it out, it's easier than you think.

Honestly, it should be worked out that Power Tab is bundled with these two apps from now one. Thank you chuck rock.

You're Welcome, and of course u can use my explaination. I'm sure it will catch on soon. I think it's the only hope we have for drums in powertabs. Its clear that Brad has given up on PTE 2.0. It's 10 years late, and not even a peep from him about the status of his development. I pretty much knew when Brad wrote the "parsers", that PTE 2.0 was dead. The parsers were his way of allowing other developers to keep powertabs alive. And he wouldn't feel so guilty about holding the file format hostage since he wont release it as open source. I even read in one of the forums, that Brad lost the source code in a hard drive crash. But I dont know if it's true. It doesnt seem like anyone is in communication with him.

Yes I agree this is the only hope to an 'upgrade' in Power Tab. I just uploaded a PDF tutorial and an example to download. The tutorial may seem long, but it's really easy, a child can do it. Come on people, get working, this is the closest you'll ever get to PTE 2.0.

Seems intersting, I'll check this out, but until then I think you could raiste interest if you posted a wav or mp3 showcasing results of this.

Oh my science that sounds epic! Lovin' the drum solo. Can you post the powertab file of that so that we can see how it looks to create that sound?

Good stuff this, this might save me from using guitarpro now to do my drum tracks :D
